Job Description:
- Purpose of Job
- Evaluates and counsels patients with chemical dependency
issues.
- Job Requirements
- Education
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science,
counseling, or psychology with an emphasis in chemical dependency
required.
- A minimum of 2 years' experience as a chemical dependency
counselor.
- Experience
- Substance abuse and treatment modalities
- Mental illness as it relates to chemical abuse, milieu and team
approach to therapy
- Community resources for the chemically dependent and treatment
planning
- Giving individual care, patient observation and assessment
- Oral and written communication.
- License/Certifications
- Substance Abuse Certificate by the Iowa Board of Substance
Abuse preferred.
- Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively
communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital
personnel, and co-workers.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
- Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills that are
required for department and hospital information system.

substance abuse.
- Family participation.
- Consistently ensures family involvement, when available, in the
treatment of the patient.
- Completion of treatment plans.
- Individualizes the patient treatment plan and allows for
coordination of goals and actions in conjunction with the other
appropriate team members.
- Direct patient care to include individual and group sessions
using appropriate therapeutic techniques.
- Exhibits good professional judgment and knowledge to assure
that all therapy sessions are conducted on a regular basis and that
they are therapeutic.
- Follow up care with patients.
- Ensures that appropriate follow-up care is planned,
communicated, and implemented.
- Insures that other team members are aware of and in approval
with plan, including physicians.
- Documentation.
- Complete all documentation in the patient records in a timely
manner ensuring complete accuracy and compliance with all
standards.
- Participates in on-going educational programs.
- Ensures that licensure/certification requirements are met.
- Attends seminars, workshops, classes to maintain knowledge and
brings that knowledge to work by developing new programs and
teaching new concepts to the team members.
- Provides educational and promotional programs to the community
and appropriate agencies.
- Presents to community agencies the dual diagnosis program.
- Provides detailed information on services offered and education
on what those services mean to the patient and the community.
- Essential Functions II
- Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as
mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as
directed by management.
- Follows and understands the mission, vision, core values,
Employee Standards of Compassionate Care/AIDET and company
policies/procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
